The groom’s cake is a traditional addition to the reception and sometimes is used at the rehearsal dinner instead.  It can be either formal or it  can be a design unique to the groom’s interests, alma mater, career or simply something meaningful to the couple.  It is often humorous and makes a great conversation starter at the reception.
